Doctors With Cancer Push California To Allow Aid In Dying : Shots - Health News : NPR

Retired San Francisco obstetrician Robert Liner, 70, is a plaintiff in a California lawsuit seeking to let doctors prescribe lethal medications to certain patients who want to die. The thing about pain is its totally subjective, she said, but doctors have a mandate to treat the patients complaints. What doctors typically do is reach for the prescription pad and write a prescription, she said. Pain pills arent prescribed as readily as they used to be, according to Miller.

But when the doctor pressed on Swangard's stomach, he felt a mango-size mass. He had a visceral feeling, he said, "something bad was happening." Within a week, a surgeon found a neuroendocrine tumor in the pancreas and metastasis in the liver. It was the same cancer that took Steve Jobs' life one that doesn't generally respond to chemotherapy or radiation. "My fears became real," Swangard said.

Exercise May Reduce Alzheimer's Fatalities, Says Study - Health News - Northjersey.com

Work Out To Give Your Career A Boost | MadameNoire

"Exercise seems to prevent the shrinkage [in the brain] that occurs with age," said study researcher Paul Williams, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif. And preserving brain volume may be why vigorous exercise helps reduce the risk of Alzheimers death, according to Williams. Williams study also found that taking cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins was linked to reduced risk of death from Alzheimers disease, as did eating three or more pieces of fruit daily. The study was published online recently in the Journal of Alzheimers Disease.

Pro Action releases Dec. 19 senior nutrition program menu - News - The Leader - Corning, NY

email (Thinkstock photo) The year 2020 is a mere five years away but will be a turning point defining a new era of nutrition for both consumers and scientists, say nutritionists who met this year at the University of California, Davis. The heart of nutrition will still be about healthful, vitamin-rich foods in moderate proportions, but will go far beyond to tackle some of the most complex and daunting challenges in human health. The advances that will be well underway when 2020 arrives will help people live healthier, longer and more productive lives, said Robert Hackman, a research nutritionist at UC Davis and lead author of the groups forecast of the 10 top trends in nutrition science, which appeared recently as a commentary in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition http://tinyurl.com/q5jebm5 . We are moving toward an era when personalized nutrition and medical strategies will be common, and new approaches to nutritional health will help address diseases such as obesity and cancer, as well as the underlying causes of inflammation and aging, Hackman said.

I appreciate that people use the term to describe eating plans that include high-quality, unprocessed foods and perhaps organic and locally-grown foods, and I applaud their efforts to eat nutritious foods. But I have a hard time with the clean-eating label because it makes me think that if you're not eating 'clean' then you're eating 'dirty.' Also, clean eating doesn't necessarily equal a balanced diet. As much as I've tried to embrace the clean eating term, I sense some shame in it. For example, people may feel bad that they can't 'eat clean,' because the cost is prohibitive or it's inconvenient.

Nutrition: Vitamins on trial : Nature News & Comment

The argument raises important questions about the quality and relevance of more than a century of studies. There will always be two polar sides to this argument, and the main reason for that is we don't know the answers we don't have evidence one way or the other, says Paul Coates, who directs the Office of Dietary Supplements at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Pooled together, evidence from double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trials suggests that hardly any nutrient supplements have a consistent health effect on people in developed countries. But many argue that the null findings reflect research deficiencies, including poor study design, inappropriate mixing of different kinds of data and misunderstandings about how much of a nutrient is enough.

A Kid Born In 2013 Will Cost $245k To Raise, Says Usda - Yahoo News

The $245,340 figure, of course, is only an average the actual amount spent will vary significantly. One of the primary differences, according to the USDA, is related to the cost of living in the part of the country where the child is raised. In the Northeast, for example, the average amount spent in the first 18 years of a childs life is $282,480. In more rural regions of the country, the cost can drop to an average of $193,590. Variations by geographic region are marked when we look at housing, for example, said Mark Lino, an economist with the USDAs Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion and one of the authors.

When these mothers grocery shop they recall the children killed by tainted Jack-In-The-Box hamburgers; they hear about the tons of recalled beef, pork and chicken; they have seen the downer cow being moved to the kill floor with a forklift. These consumers know that some livestock feed additives have a withdrawal period prior to slaughter, but they have no idea if this restriction was honored. As a result of fear, mom walks past the meat cooler, and little Jack and Jill are on the path to veggie world.

"We still traditionally take payments on the lunch line, but the responsibility of lunch money or breakfast money and monitoring your child's lunch balance is with the parents," Coleman said. "Sending notes home don't always get to parents." The system is accessed through a website, www.mypaymentsplus.com , and Coleman said a Smartphone app is also available at no cost. Children who have special needs in nutrition are assisted with the district nutrition program, as well. "We have lots of food allergies in our district," Coleman said.
